[00:05:43] Speaker C: This is Open youn eyes radio with Dr. Kerry Gelb.
[00:05:46] Speaker D: Good morning, I'm Dr. Kerry Gelb and welcome to Wellness 1280 on open your Eyes Radio. Please listen as I discuss the newest information in the world of health, nutrition and sports. Every Saturday morning, 6am Central Time on AM 1280 of the Patriot. Also, please share your thoughts by emailing me at Dr. Kerrygel gmail.com wellness is taking over the Patriot Airways for the next hour. Sit back and enjoy my interview with the carnivore doctor, Dr. Lisa Wiederman. Dr. Wiederman was nice enough to come back and speak to us. We spoke to her last week and we there was a lot of other questions that I needed to ask her, so she's kind enough to spend another hour with us. She's a New Jersey optometrist or an optometric physician. She's known as the Carnivore Doctor and she had carb and sugar addictions and she kicked it with the Carnivore diet for the past 15 years. Now she dedicates herself to coaching. She leads group sessions. She does these beach retreats. She does she's doing a Cruise Winter Cruise 2025, February 1 to 7 where she teaches Carnivore. And you could connect with her on YouTube at the Carnivore Doctor and the Carnivore Eye Doctor and visit her website, carnivore doctor.com so Lisa, at the end of last at the end of last podcast radio show, we were talking about possible side effects to the Carnivore diet. And let me ask you, do we have to worry about oxalates or histamine with the Carnivore Diet?
[00:07:29] Speaker C: Well, no more than we have to worry about them if you're on a standard atrocious diet because histamine intolerance, you know, and actually that can improve over time. With carnivore oxalate dumping, that's a significant issue for people who have, let's say, been doing a lot of spinach smoothies and then realizing that that's such a high oxalate content and that spinach actually is not healthy for us. I know news break there, but that when people come off them, sometimes they have a very difficult time with what's called Oxalate dumping. And I would direct people to Sally Norton.
She is a specialist in oxalates and does a wonderful job of explaining how to get through oxalate dumping.
[00:08:27] Speaker D: So let's go back a second for the people that may have missed the first, the first episode last week and they could go back and listen to it, but just explain again what a carnivore diet is and what it entails.
[00:08:41] Speaker C: Yeah, so basically it's eliminating everything except for meat, eggs, seafood and water.
I, I don't eat any fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, nothing. And people have a hard time really comprehending what that means. But it means if it was once, I eat it, if it had a mother, I eat it. And it's basically eating an entire animal based diet. And it has come to be for me life changing. And I am so fortunate. I found it back when I was 44. I wish I had found it when I was 24. And it's just so empowering to me to watch the many in the scientific and medical community now coming to this way of eating and eating it themselves.
[00:09:36] Speaker D: And how about cheese?
What about cheese on a diet?
[00:09:40] Speaker C: Yeah, that's a great topic because yes, it came from a cow, a sheep, a goat to make the cheese, milk and cheese products. They have, you know, the capability of being opioid and casomorphine producing that. It's addictive. And aside from that. So I find I have that issue that I don't, I don't eat cheese often at all, only maybe on a burger at a restaurant. I don't keep it in my house. And partly also because anybody who has any sort of autoimmune issues, there's, there's so many of them, but arthritic issues, thyroid issues, it's best to avoid cheese altogether. So I, but at the beginning I don't think I would have been able to transition into carnivore without cheese because there's a lot of incredible wonderful recipes that you can make with cheese. But I ideally now I try to limit it.
[00:10:47] Speaker D: And how about the difference between from a cow or a sheep, you know, or goat, the different cheeses because goat is supposedly more like human milk as opposed to. Yeah. Could you comment if you got eat cheese, would you be better off with lamb or goat?
[00:11:04] Speaker C: Yes, I would say yes to that. And also to try to find raw milk cheese which you're able to find like Whole Foods has some raw milk cheese, raw sheep cheese.
So. And some of the hard cheeses or fermented like aged gouda is, or yeah, the aged cheeses are better.
So yeah, that would be ideal if you're going to include cheeses, but want to be careful about it.
[00:11:36] Speaker D: And how about butter?
Butter or ghee for cooking?
[00:11:42] Speaker C: Yeah, if you tolerate butter, which I do, it's a great fat source for cooking. I basically only use either bacon fat or butter, sometimes duck fat.
Sometimes I actually eat butter. I have a recipe on YouTube where I make brown butter. And you can do some bacon crumbles on the bottom and pour brown butter over it, put it in the freezer. We call it carnivore crack. And it's, it's delicious. And that's actually another. That last podcast that we spoke at, Kerry, we talked about different things to try to help stave off sugar cravings. And having those brown butter bacon bites in the freezer is an awesome way to be able to go and get something that's really delicious but not sweet.
[00:12:39] Speaker D: So explain again how you make those. Explain that again.
[00:12:42] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:12:43] Speaker C: So making brown butter is pretty simple, but it helps to see it on the YouTube video because it goes through all the phases of how it foams up and you want to be careful not to burn it. But it's pretty, it's really pretty simple. And then it takes like maybe 10 minutes. And then you pour it over some bacon bits in a, in a glass container, freeze it, pop it out, break it into pieces, and it's insanely good.
[00:13:09] Speaker D: Oh, that's good. Thanks for that. So talk to me about the glucose ketone index, the GKI index. What is it and how important is that?
[00:13:19] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, that's a whole different aspect of this. That's actually really important because the more I've looked into optimization of health, the more I am leading toward ketosis being an actual important part of this. And it's not a simple thing to be in ketosis. You have to eat a high enough fat diet, which typically is 80, 20 is the macro ratio of, you know, some people at 75, 25 can be in ketosis. Some it takes more, but it's hard for a lot of people to comprehend.
[00:14:02] Speaker D: 75, what's the 80th? The fat.
[00:14:04] Speaker C: The other fat. Yeah. And so it is. This is a, it's a high fat diet. And I know a lot of people have fat phobia, but fat does not make you fat and fat does not harm your arteries. And it's. You can eat, make beef fat cracklings. Some, some of the butchers around me will actually, they know me now. They, they same it up and give it to me for free. And you just salt it up and put it in an air fryer and it's delicious. And even making pork belly, that's another way of getting higher fat and also eating butter.
[00:14:41] Speaker D: And you said you tested your cholesterol.
[00:14:43] Speaker C: And yeah, my cholesterol is fine. You really the lowest death rate is total cholesterol between 180 and 280. And I tell people don't believe the the pharmaceutical industry that has, you know, dictated that we have to get our LDL low because it's actually a higher death rate with a low cholesterol. Every cell in our body needs cholesterol. Our liver makes cholesterol. If we don't eat enough, our body makes it. It's, it's a very fine tuned machine. We should not be lowering it with.
[00:15:15] Speaker D: Statins so our body's not kill us.
[00:15:19] Speaker C: Yeah, not at all.
[00:15:21] Speaker D: I'm speaking with Dr. Lisa Wiedemann as we up against the break. Thecarnivordoctor.com this is Dr. Kerrygove. You're listening to Wellness 1280 on Open youn Eyes radio on AM 1280. The Patriots.
[00:15:37] Speaker A: I went to the eye doctor the other day with my daughter Maggie. I was shocked when the doctor told me that my daughter was already becoming nearsighted. It turns out that this problem affects more than 40% of Americans. My eye doctor thinks this disease is getting worse. Perhaps it's getting worse because of kids prolonged time spent playing with smartphones or maybe because kids now spend less time outside. My genetics probably aren't helping her a whole lot being nearsighted myself. But the good news is that the doctor told me about a new FDA approved product called My Sight. This specific one day contact lens is already worn by thousands of children in the US it is proven to slow down the progression of nearsightedness. And best of all, Maggie loves these contact lenses. The doctor taught her how to use them. Now it is so exciting to see her have even more success in the classroom and when she plays sports. [email protected] Open your Eyes podcast released every Monday morning on all podcasts platforms. And make sure you see our documentary open your eyes on Apple TV, Amazon prime or YouTube movies and shows. So let's talk about elimination diet and let's talk about some of Chris Kenobi's work. I mean people have grown up in the United States with vegetable oils and seed oils. So let's talk about the oils and what why they're not good for us. These type of oils.
[00:19:23] Speaker C: Yeah, you know canola oil is originally made for an engine lubricant as Canadian stands for. Canola is I guess Canadian oil and it is toxic to our bodies. And the reason why it's so broadly used is because it's inexpensive and it allows for long shelf stability. So they can keep things on the shelf longer without anything, without it spoiling. Meanwhile, it's extremely toxic and stays in our body for a long period of time, about a 680 day half life. So we need to avoid it like the plague. And it's everywhere. It's in everything. And if you pick up a package and look, it's cottonseed and, or palm oil, canola oil, soybean oil, everything. I, I say oil does not belong in our body. And people say, what about olive oil? That's good. Right? It's like, well, they've done tests and 80% of them were found to be adulterated with garbage oil, seed oils. So I don't trust any oil.
[00:20:33] Speaker D: And so, and we, you mentioned this before, but for cooking, you're using ghee or.
[00:20:39] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:20:40] Speaker D: Or.
[00:20:41] Speaker C: Yep. There's, there's wonderful ways of getting lots of different cooking fats. We'll just call them fats because there's a Wagyu beef tallow right. On Amazon you could get.
And there's duck fat sprays you could get, and bacon fat. It's very easy to save bacon fat and just use that for your cookie or butter.
[00:21:11] Speaker D: Yeah. And Dr. Kenobi did all this research on chronic disease before oils and after oils, if you could share some of that.
[00:21:20] Speaker C: Yeah. So he spent, I believe, eight years researching and dissecting all the information that he is fully confident that the rise in macular degeneration came about with the rise of seed oils. And you know, Carrie, I know you're in practice probably as long as I am. And at the very, very beginning, I didn't see macular degeneration like I do now. And back in, let's say, Even when in Dr. Kenobi's research back in the early, early 1900s, macular degeneration was one in hundreds of thousands. And now over the age of 75, it's 1 in 3. And over the age of 55, it's 1 in 11 people. And it's just very hard to comprehend that this hasn't come about because it's certainly not just from age, because we can't call it age related back to the degeneration because there was just as many old people in 1910 as there are now. So the. It, you know, he was just very diligent about continuing to study this and figure out how and where and why this came about and just trying to get the message out that, you know, and to avoid seed oils like the plague. It's really that important. If there's one thing that we can emphasize, it's that as far as your food intake.
[00:22:55] Speaker D: And he talks about how it causes oxidative stress and inflammation and how.
And how it damages lipoproteins and they get stuck in the arterial walls, leading to atherosclerosis. So it makes people at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, also cancer. And he explains arthritis, diabetes, obesity, how these chronic diseases run together with the beginning of these inflammatory oils. Corn, canola, soybean, safflower, sunflower, margarine, which I grew up on margarine. I remember my mother telling me that my butter was bad, and she made me eat margarine, and I hated it. And I would tell her, you got to buy butter. And of course, you know, because margarine tastes fake. And it was. It was horrible. And so, you know, but you. You live and you learn. You know, that you try to do good things because you're believing, you know, what we're being told by the authorities. And, you know, Casey Means. I don't know if, you know, Dr. Casey means, and she's done this whole research on. And, you know, on how the dangers of the food supply, you know, from the American Diabetes, Associated American Cancer Society, the American Heart. The American Heart. So if you can talk a little bit about. About what we're being fed by the government, about what to eat, where that information is coming from, and why they're feeding us that type of information and why that information isn't always healthy for us.
[00:24:35] Speaker C: Yeah. This is such a frustrating thing to.
And a scary thing to wake up to and realize that we actually need to do the opposite of what we're told. I mean, I still will get a mailer from a local medical, you know, hospital group telling. Telling me that I should be eating vegetable oils. And I'm in. I'm in disbelief. And it's the old follow the money. Who is sponsoring who is paying who, and to say what? And then we just keep going further. As far as, you know, they tell you to slather on sunscreen, and I say, nope, no, no, nope. Not putting on those toxic chemicals on my skin. Our skin needs the sun. So, you know, everything comes down to, unfortunately, it's follow the money. They're. They're not going to promote something that's healthy, that's not going to make somebody money.
[00:25:41] Speaker D: And how about, you know, we were talking about the food before. How about bone broth what's your opinion on bone broth?
[00:25:49] Speaker C: Yeah, like, I like it. I, what I do is as I go through the week and any bone from my porterhouse or my ribeye or even pork chops or lamb chops, they just go into a container in the freezer. And then once I get enough, I dump it in my crock pot, put some water in, put some apple cider vinegar, a couple tablespoons and a little bit of salt and cook it for a good 24 hours. And it leeches all the incredible nutrients right out of the marrow and the bone. And it's, it's great. And that's actually also another thing. Like we said, Kerry, we're looking for those things to overcome that sugar and carb craving when you're abstaining and getting off of it. But bone broth is wonderful. Also getting off that coffee drink with the creamer and the sugars in it, sip a nice hot mug because that way you still have the ritual, you have the warmth and. Yeah, a nice hot mug of bone broth.
[00:26:51] Speaker D: And to talk about some other things besides diet. Infrared sauna, red light therapy. Do you have an infrared sauna in your house? And I used to have one when I lived in New Jersey. Now I'm in Florida right now. But when I was in New Jersey, I had a big infrared sauna in my basement and I would go in three or four times a week at 130 degrees for 30 minutes. But what do you feel about infrared sauna? Was I making a mistake or was I doing something good for myself?
[00:27:22] Speaker C: No, I give that a big thumbs up. I have an infrared sauna myself and probably about the same as you. I did it, I do it three, sometimes four times a week, 15, 20 minutes. And then also just infrared light therapy, too.
Yeah, I think it's very beneficial. You know, it's interesting. We could go down the rabbit hole on all sorts of, let's just call biohacking things because I'll bring this up. The whole craze of cold plunging.
I'm, I'm not a cold plunger, so not as of yet.
[00:28:02] Speaker D: I, that's something. I could go in the heat, but going into a cold plunge, I know it seems like it's something that could be, be healthy for you. Let's talk about safe sun, being out in the sun, the importance of, you know, in my movie we had Jack Cruz and he's all about being in the sun. And, you know, and to be healthy you got to be in the sun. And if you Put a tarp over all the plants outside, they would all die. So, so tell us about why it's important to be in the sun.
[00:28:32] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm a huge proponent of the sun and getting out in the sun. And at a minimum 20 to 30 minutes at sunrise, within one to two hours after you awaken, open the door, open the window, go outside.
And then we could add earthing to that where you walk in your bare feet on the grass or the dirt or the stones, that's also extremely beneficial. But so as far as the sun, though, that morning sun is really important. And then I say getting out at least an hour in the midday and try again getting sunset sun because, you know, we've become creatures that we wake up in a box called home. We get in our car box and we drive to our office box. And then we get back in the car box, we might go into the store box and then we drive home in the car box to the home box. And that leaves such an unnatural environment for us as humans. We are meant to be outside.
And there's so many important things that happen when the sun hits your skin. It's so incredibly important. And then I also say when you're outside, that's with no glasses and no contacts on. So if you're somebody who wears thick glasses and can't see, you might as well pull up a chair and take them off for at least a period of time where you can get the sunlight actually into your eyes. Because glasses, whether they're sunglasses or regular prescription glasses, they are blocking the uv. So that's it's really what you need into your eyes.
[00:30:19] Speaker D: So we're coming up against the break. We don't want you looking directly into the sun. So I just want to make that clear. This is Dr. Kerry Gelb. You're listening to Wellness 1280 on Open youn Eyes radio on AM 1280, the Patriot. We'll be back with Dr. Lisa Wiedemann in just a moment.

If this is interest, if this is interesting to you, go to her website. You can sign up for the cruise. I think she's got over 100 people already signed up. And you know she's not going to force you to eat anything, but she's going to teach you about being carnivore if you want to. And remember to Visit my website, wellness1280.com all comments Dr. Kerrygelmail.com Our Open your eyes podcast released every Monday morning on all podcast platforms and of course, our documentary open your eyes on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and YouTube movies and shows. So we're back with Dr. Lisa. Dr. Lisa, tell us what the sun does for us that's beneficial. We know it's beneficial, but what does it do for us? And how long should we be out there to try to, we don't want to get burnt. So how long should we start? As someone who never goes out in the sun, should they start 10 minutes and then the next day 20 minutes or 10 minutes for a few days? What do you think?
[00:35:00] Speaker C: Yeah, we have to be smart about this because a lot of people haven't built up their solar callus.
And I will say this, many, many, many people report who have switched to a carnivore diet and eliminated all those seed oils, find that their skin amazingly doesn't burn like it used to. So there's that huge benefit because now we don't have these toxic seed oils embedded in our cells.
And the other issue is, yeah, we're not going to just go out in midday sun for three, four hours.
We do things like shade, clothing. It's just the point of really not slathering on that, any of those toxic sunscreen chemicals. They've done studies where if you put sunscreen on, let's say on a Monday, one week later, they can still detect the chemical from that sunscreen in your blood.
So, and we don't want to block the sun, but we want to do it smart. The sun, it will give us benefits of nitric oxide and of course, the hormone vitamin D, which is a hormone, is one of the main things that people understand comes from the sun. But again, if we're on the beach for hours or we're out on a boat Both of those instances, I will say yes. Sunglasses and appropriate sunblock. Because there are beef tallow based zinc oxide sunscreens that are completely healthy. I always say don't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't eat. So I will actually put some of that beef tallow sunscreen on my finger and show people, yeah, I can eat this. This is anything you put on your skin. Your skin is your largest organ. It absorbs into your bloodstream. So think long and hard before you put any Vaseline, Intensive Care, any sort of product like that. You should be using beef tallow based products. There's all huge, huge amounts of companies now that put out some wonderful whipped beef tallow skincare products.
[00:37:21] Speaker D: Does it smell bad? You smell it?
[00:37:23] Speaker C: It smells wonderful. And it's, yeah, it's, it doesn't have an odor. And some of them are unscented. Some of them, they'll put lavender essential oil in it. No, they're wonderful.
[00:37:35] Speaker D: So let's move to blue filtering lenses. You know, both optometrists and, you know, this is something that was, had a big craze a couple of years ago and then there was a study done by one of the university optometric centers that said they really don't do anything. And, and you know, there's a big, there's a big lot of controversy in the community. I'll go to a continuing education and they'll talk about these filtering, these blue filtering lenses. And they're, half the audience says it's, it's bullshit or it's no good. The other half is pro and they wear it themselves and they, they feel a benefit, especially with sleep because, because you know, you're not blocking the melatonin when you're looking at digital devices. So where do you, where do you stand on this, Lisa? Somebody who's looked at this and really studied it quite a while.
[00:38:29] Speaker C: Yeah. I am such a strong believer in the necessity of blocking artificial light.
And so much so that in my home, once the sun has set, I have little motion detector, rechargeable red light, little devices in different rooms. So as I walk in, it lightens it. I have no lights on in my house. It's either beeswax, candles and these little red lights. If I do go onto a device, my phone or a tablet, I definitely have my blue blocking glasses on. I do fully believe, you know, I'm a big fan of Dr. Jack Cruz and quantum biology and I am 100% convinced that that is toxic to our bodies and our brains.
[00:39:27] Speaker D: Jack Cruz was in our movie and he was gracious to be in our movie and he spoke about that now. So tell me about the different types of blue filtering lenses. We want to filter at 455. So if you're getting blue blockers, what do you know what, what number it's going to filter?
[00:39:47] Speaker C: Yeah, so basically the. So there's the amber, the amber lenses and then the darker orange ones. So I just say the darker orange ones that block all blue and green only like an hour to two hours prior to your bedtime. I would say that that's an ideal lens. And prior to that, like throughout the day. So even in daytime, I try to take my laptop outside and do work outside because then at least I'm getting the full spectrum if I am inside. Like today, it's a little rainy out there and I'm going to work on my computer. I will put my amber glasses on, which are the blue blocking ones. You know, once you get to the darker orange, it's kind of hard to edit graphics and do things that require color. But I think it's really important that you're thinking long and hard about how much artificial light comes into your eyes, Especially people who are sitting in office all day with artificial lights blaring in their eyes the entire day. You should, and any chance you get on a break, go outside.
[00:40:58] Speaker D: I think it's important that we make a distinction between artificial light and light from the sun, because blue light has a dual purpose, you know, so if so, blue light isn't necessarily bad. We need the blue light to make melatonin and we need the melatonin to help us sleep. So tell us about the good parts of blue light and the bad parts of blue. The artificial blue light when we're looking, staring at a computer, especially at night, and it's, and it's tricking our body to think, well, it's day and it's going to knock down our melatonin.
[00:41:29] Speaker C: Yeah. So the, the important thing to understand with the blue light with our artificial devices is it is just magnifying that one part of the spectrum. Whereas when we're outside that wonderful part, that wonderful blue light wavelength is part of the entire spectrum that we're getting with the proper notification to our brain of what time of day it is. And all of these devices, and especially LED lights, the tv, the computers, your tablets, your phones are emitting just a concentrated section of the spectrum, which is really what is toxic to us.
[00:42:14] Speaker D: And how about night shift workers who are up all night looking at, you know, looking at digital Devices. There's been studies that show that they have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, definitely sleep disorders, metabolic problems such as insulin resistance, becoming diabetic, being overweight. Can you speak to that?
[00:42:34] Speaker C: Yeah. And even infertility, there's depression. So many issues with night shift workers. And yeah, I know this is rough because people are going to say, well, I can't do that. But I just strongly encourage people to do whatever. You can shift your life and your job to be a not night shift worker. It's that important. It's critical to your health. And you know, at a very minimum, the nightshift worker should at least be wearing the dark blue blocker glasses. But that's really still not going to solve the problem. And they're going to, you know, they have to be sleeping during the day and up at night and it is a disaster for health.
[00:43:24] Speaker D: Some of the blue filtering lenses are clear. So can you make a distinction between the clear ones and the ones that have a tinted like you mentioned, yellow or.
[00:43:36] Speaker C: Yeah, I, I really think that the, at a minimum you should have the amber tint in them.
I, that's, that's one of the things of all the research that I've been doing and for my own personal life, I wear the amber tint through the day, not the clear ones. I don't believe it blocks enough of the blue light spectrum when you're doing the clear.
[00:43:59] Speaker D: You know, I'm a fan of blue tech Regnations company and we, we, we, we had Matt Maruka on our show who has a company called RA Optics. But you have some other companies that you like for getting these blue lenses from?
[00:44:19] Speaker C: Yeah, I just, I think it's important to research and make sure it's a reputable company. The, the raw optics is, is great. I myself have been using EMR tech. They make the infrared light lamps too, and the blue blocker glasses.
And yeah, there's, there's quite a few really good companies I just hesitate to recommend like us, just a, any kind of spec off of Amazon because this is an important thing that you're doing here, blocking certain wavelengths of light. You need to make sure it's a good quality brand.
[00:45:05] Speaker D: And when we get back from the break, I want to talk about the UV blocking. You know, people go in and, you know, I, I think they have to pay extra to get UV lenses. And so I want you to tell us a little bit about that and is that really necessary? Because I think most of the lenses, at least four out of five lenses that make the plastic Lenses already block the uv, but we're going to talk about that when we get back from the break. This is Dr. Kerrigo and we're speaking with Dr. Lisa Wiedemann.
[00:45:38] Speaker A: I went to the eye doctor the other day with my daughter Maggie. But the good news is that the doctor told me about a new FDA approved product called MySight. This specific one day contact lens is already worn by thousands of children in the US it has proven to slow down the progression of nearsightedness. And best of all, Maggie loves these contact lenses. The doctor taught her how to use them. Now it is so exciting to see her have even more success in the classroom and when she plays sports. [00:48:39] Speaker D: I want to thank Dr. Lisa Wiedemann for joining me today at the Carnivore Doctor at Carnivore Eye Doctor.
She's been very generous with our time. This is our second hour and clearing up a lot of misconceptions and telling us what has worked for her and a lot of people in her community, how they've helped a lot of people with Carnivore with their health. And if you want to learn more about that, go and listen to part one because we spoke a lot about general health problems at Carnivore and part one and this part we're talking a little bit about eye stuff because we're both eye doctors. So tell me at the break I mentioned about UV light, do people need to pay extra for the UV light coating that they're offered when they go and get their eyes examined?
[00:49:29] Speaker C: Yeah. So my thing with the UV blocking is you should do everything you can to not block the uv.
And it's very difficult because even in your clear prescription glasses, like you mentioned before the break, four out of five of them are really blocking most all of the uv. So tell people if you're, you know, out walking your dog, take your glasses off, let the natural sunlight get into your eyes. Because whether it's sunglasses or your regular prescription glasses, they're blocking the uv. And I had gotten into a conversation and actually I, I just recently did a YouTube video where I spoke about this because people were asking which contact lenses don't block the uv, because if you follow me and this whole community of people, our strong belief is you need the uv, the all of the spectrum of the light into your eyes and these.
[00:50:31] Speaker D: Let me interrupt you for once tell us the benefit of getting UV into your body.
[00:50:35] Speaker C: Yeah. It's so important for our circadian Rhythm. Our eyes are not just for vision. I mean, that's what the majority of people think. Our eyes are there for us to see. They are connected to our brain. They have receptors in. We have lots of different receptors in our eyes that are not actually for vision. So there's melanopsin, there's. And it's, it's actually triggered by the UV and signaling to our brain different aspects of what time of day it is and what things we should and should not be producing at that time. So that's why I say don't wear those sunglasses all the time. And unfortunately for most people who wear contacts all day, most of the companies jumped on board with their marketing team. Yay. Ours have UV blockers in them and boo. We don't want your contacts then. And I have people who have reached out and I did a, you know, little video about it about some companies that do not put the UV blocker in. And that's actually what we want. We want the full spectrum of light to get into our eyes.
[00:51:47] Speaker D: Yeah, I was, it was. I know that CooperVision in Pro Clear and their. My day contact lens does not block uv. And yeah, hopefully they might have done that on purpose for people to. Because of the benefit of getting uv. And you can always put on sunglasses if you want. But there is a benefit to getting natural light on your whole body and not looking at the sun, but getting natural light. I want to turn now to a study that was recently released in 2024 in Journal of Current Ophthalmology and how nutrition is paramount for importance of the visual system and that poor nutrition and proper nutrition reduces. Reduces degenerative eye disease. And I want to talk about some of the regenerative eye disease and non degenerative eye disease. Let's start with dry eye. Being an eye doctor, I want to tell you a story quick. I had a. You know, people know him on, on the, on, on the radio. They know I do this podcast. I get a lot of calls from people's friends. Can they speak to you? So I had somebody call me the other day and their eyes are very dry and you know, and I asked them what they eat and they're mostly. They're a vegetarian pretty much. They only eat once a day.
They drink. They drink some water, but not a lot of water, but basically they eat mostly vegetables. But they, the tear film is very complicated and I wasn't surprised that she would have dry eye based on her diet being more of a vegetarian, which it's very hard to be a real Vegetarian without eating junk food. I mean, there's really not. It's hard to eat. There's nothing to eat. In fact, I practice, I still practice optometry even though I live mostly in Florida. I, I go up once a month and I see patients in New Jersey, in Woodbridge, New Jersey, I'll see patients for a week. And we have a big Indian population and they're vegans. And some of them are vegans because of religious reasons or vegetarians because of religious reasons. And the ones that are vegetarians are very unhealthy. They have the metabolic syndrome. They have a lot of cardiovascular disease. A good friend of mine who's a cardiologist, Jeffrey Gold in Union, New Jersey, talks about how they have terrible cardiovascular disease, the vegetarian Indian people. So anyway, going back to dry eye and the patient that I had, the tear film was so complicated. Explain how somebody like that could have dry eyes.
[00:54:26] Speaker C: Yeah, I, I love what you're, you're saying about the vegetarian diet because there has been so many people who, flipping on a dime, switch from vegetarian to carnivore once they start watching. There's a lot of vegetarian, prior vegetarians that have switched to carnivore and totally revamped their health. And so it's important to understand that's really not a healthy diet and that it can actually create a lot of health issues, including autoimmune issues. And dry eye is part of that. You know, it can be part of autoimmune issues, but it's so integral to what we eat. And again, the amount of light that we're getting and the amount of toxic blue light we are emitting.
I've had patients who, I know this sounds crazy, but I had a patient actually who had dry eye and significant blepharitis and my bomitis, and they listened to me because they were at their wit's end and they did not want to go on low dose doxy. They didn't. They were like, what can I do? And I said, I know this sounds crazy, but here, follow me on Instagram and pay attention to this. And six months later, this guy hugged me. He said, I'm, I'm at my high school weight. My eyes have never felt better. And since then I've had quite a few people because, you know, I have quite a following on Instagram and YouTube, but so people report to me saying I went to Carnivore because of diabetes, but oh my gosh, I had severe dry eye and it's gone. And I've never felt Better. So just to understand that getting enough fat, a high fat diet and eating animal foods is really important to the health of our meibomian glands and our lacrimal glands and our whole tear structure.
[00:56:35] Speaker D: Yeah. I mean, inflammation is the cause of dry eye. And people that are on, that are eating a lot of processed foods, they're going to become very inflamed. So they're going to be at much higher risk of getting, getting, you know, having dry eye and having a proper nutrition, a proper human diet, as you call it. People do much, much better. Let's talk about cataracts. Okay. Cataracts and some of the studies with that and Carnivore.
[00:57:06] Speaker C: Yeah. I say the, it's so interesting because so many people will come on my live Q&As and say, will carnivore cure this? Will carnivore cure that? I've got this and can I expect whatever. And here's the thing, our bodies are here to evolve. Our bodies want to continually go toward health. And the important thing to understand is carnivore is a going to help every organ system. It doesn't just cure your diabetes and then ignore your eyes. So the wonderful thing is there's a healing process and whether it's cataracts. I have had patients report that they've gone back to their doctor and they actually had improvement in their vision. So I'm not sure end stage cataracts could be turned around, but for sure the majority of any eye disease will be improved.
[00:58:11] Speaker D: As we're coming up to the end of the show, I just want to bring up this one study that was done with 19,000 people and people who consume ultra processed foods first. People with less ultra processed foods. The ones that had more ultra processed food had a greater risk of developing glaucoma. So we're going to wrap it up. I'm speaking with Dr. Lisa Wiedemann. Dr. Wiedemann, if people want to find out in the last minute or so about you, how can they do that?
[00:58:39] Speaker C: Yeah. Jump over to my website, carnivore-doctor.com or my YouTube channel, Carnivore. Dr. I am really pretty good at answering all my messages and I'd love to get in touch with you. I have a membership group and I meet with multiple times a week and come join my carb sober cruise.
